The 8th Eastern Economic Forum has just taken place in the city of Vladivostok – the capital of Russia’s Far Eastern federal district. One of the main topics of this year’s forum is logistics, including sea transport. This is also a potential field of cooperation that the Russian side is promoting with Vietnam, aiming to develop direct transportation services to shorten transportation time and reduce logistics costs in goods trade between the two countries. .
Nearly 80% of goods from Vietnam to Russia go through Vladivostok seaport. A small portion stays and is consumed in the Far East, while the majority is shipped to larger markets in Western Russia. According to the Vietnam Trade Office in the Far East, in 2022 – after the direct sea route from Vietnamese seaports to Vladivostok is opened, the amount of goods from Vietnam exported here will increase by 25%.
Mr. Nguyen Hong Thanh – Vietnam Economic and Trade Consul in the Far East, Russian Federation said: “The biggest advantage of this direct sea route is the matter of time. Goods from Vietnam to Vladivostok only take about 10 – 12 days. Total transport time from Vietnam to Moscow is about 15 – 20 days. Meanwhile, if traveling from Vietnamese ports to Saint Petersburg as before, it will take about 45 – 50 days.”
Goods from Vietnam previously had to go through Korea’s Busan port to reach Vladivostok. Currently, the sea route transporting containers directly to Vladivostok port – Hai Phong – Ho Chi Minh City and vice versa is being exploited by two Russian shipping companies, Fesco and Transit, with an average frequency of one each. trips/week.
Mr. Andrey Grechkin – General Director of Dalreftrans Company, FESCO Transport Group said: “In the past 8 months we have transported nearly 19,000 TEUs along this route, with an almost equal amount of goods both ways. This is a very important economic aspect, avoiding unnecessary deviations, that is, turning the ship in another direction. We work on a straight route and this is an advantage.”
It is expected that by the end of this year, FESCO Sea Transport Group will establish a representative office in Vietnam to speed up cargo transportation activities between the two countries, and at the same time implement a plan to build a transshipment point at the port. Ho Chi Minh City to forward Russian goods to further markets in Southeast Asia.
