Egypt’s Suez Canal Authority (SCA) has announced an increase in shipping fees through the canal by 5-15% starting from January 15, 2024.
+ 15% increase for ships carrying crude oil, ships carrying liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), liquefied natural gas (LNG) and passenger ships
+ 5% increase for dry cargo ships, general cargo ships and roll-on/roll-off ships.
The fee increase policy will not apply to container ships arriving directly from Northwest European ports and going directly to Far Eastern ports.
Shipping fee increases are often based on factors such as fuel prices, vessel capacity and services provided.
In January 2023, SCA increased shipping fees by 10% for cruise ships and bulk cargo ships and 15% for other cargo ships.
In the 2022/23 financial year, revenue from the Suez Canal increased 25.2% over the previous year, reaching a record $8.8 billion as the number of ships passing through the canal increased 17.6% in, reaching about 26,000 ships.
